THE ROCKCITY ROLLERS

Roller derby is a relatively new sport in the Netherlands. The full-contact sport originated in Texas in the 1930s but saw a major resurgence in popularity around 2001. Players in Texas adopted a tougher playing style, adding Rock 'n Roll-inspired hairstyles, bold makeup, and fishnet stockings to their look. The sport combines elements of roller skating and rugby, with two teams competing on an oval track. The goal is for one player, marked by a star on their helmet, to lap the opposing team while teammates and opponents try to block each other.

In roller derby, physicality, strategy, and endurance are key. Players can use their bodies to hinder or block opponents, creating intense and fast-paced action. To keep players safe, helmets, mouthguards, gloves, and kneepads are standard protective gear. But beyond the gear, the sport is also known for its unique culture, infused with punk, alternative fashion, and an empowering sense of community.

In the Netherlands, 'Rockcity' Eindhoven is home to the Rockcity Rollers. The city’s rebellious spirit and love for underground culture make it a perfect match for this dynamic sport. The Rockcity Rollers embody the passion, energy, and camaraderie that define roller derby, turning every match into an unforgettable experience, blending fierce competition with a strong sense of friendship and fun.
